I Am - The Resurrection and the Life

Well good morning Listen if you ask me what was my favorite part of our Easter egg extravaganza yesterday it is this that your pastor smarter this year than he was two years ago So two years ago Denise and I had just moved in like two days earlier And so we showed up for the church's Easter egg hunt And nobody said "Hey pastor if you're new to Colorado we're 5,000 ft closer to the sun so you should wear some sunblock." So two years ago I showed up here looking like an Easter egg on the Sunday afterwards So my favorite part is I'm wiser and smarter than I was two years ago But it really was a great day Um just the fact church thank you And like Dawson said whether you gave candy or just you're financially just generous or you gave time to have two or 300 kids from our community come celebrate with us And the good news is the church now or the families now know South Sub is a church So when they're looking to come someplace or they're needing something they know where to come And you're a big part of that So thank you It's been a busy busy busy April for us Like we had the Easter egg hunt Um this coming week we've got our our Holy Week services We've got Monday Thursday on Thursday We've got Good Friday on Friday I'm looking forward to the Good Friday service We're trying something new this year It's going to be a multi-ensury expression um of the Good Friday service And that I mean we'll be using and engaging our senses of of of hearing of of smell of touch I think it's going to be just one of those really impactful moments as we reflect on the death of our c of our savior But here's the good news We may reflect on his death but we can look forward to Sunday because we know what happens three days later And so I hope you'll join us for all of our services And of course um next next Sunday Easter Sunday um we'll have our 9:00 and 11:00 service Um people have asked are they going to be same different What are they going to look like They will be a reflection of what we have every Sunday So if you come to the 9:00 it's going to be more of a contemporary expression as we celebrate the resurrection If you come to the 11:00 it's going to be the more traditional part of it I do know the choir has something really really special planned You won't want to miss that And then um just as we round out Easter don't forget we're in the book of John How many of you started reading with us on April 1st as we're working Good deal How many of you are still up to date on the book of John Good deal It kind of goes down a little bit but we committed as a church on April 1st There's 21 chapters in the book of John and we committed as a church trying to read one chapter a day And so today you should be on the 13th chapter If you haven't started you can just jump in with us tomorrow on the 14th And as you hit next Sunday the 20th that is the whole story of the resurrection And here's what I think It will put us all in a better place as we step into Easter that we will truly truly just worship in the resurrection next Sunday So we are looking forward to it But we've got to keep working through our I am series We started this series about four weeks ago This is our fifth week And we're looking at the seven different I am statements that Jesus made in the Gospel of John And every time he made these I am statements they were declare himself and he says "I am." And he fills in the blank And it really was to declare and give us a better clear picture of who he is And so if you have your Bibles we'll have it up on the screen here today Um we'll be looking at the 11th chapter the fifth I am And here's what the gospel writer records starting in verse one He said "A man named Lazarus was sick He lived in Bethany with his sisters Mary and Martha." If you grew up going to Sunday school or vacation Bible school or you've been to church just a little bit you'll probably heard that name It's a well-known name throughout the Bible Lazarus and his two sisters Mary and Martha were probably Jesus's very best friends Now the Bible doesn't say how long they go back knowing one another but you can take as you read different passages in the scripture that they truly were just some really good friends almost those kind of friends that are closer than family members And so Jesus finds out that his good friend Lazarus is sick And in verse three it says this So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him "Lord your dear friend is very sick." So undoubtedly Lazarus must have been really sick Um we're going to find out later that he's actually going to die but at this point we don't know how sick he is just very sick And we know the message that was sent Jesus was probably in an area or a town called Perea And Perea was about 20 miles away from Bethany and 20 miles back in those days since they didn't have cars planes or trains And if you didn't have a donkey to ride on it would have taken you about two days to make the journey from where Jesus was to where Lazarus was sick in the town of Bethany And so there was a distance between them But here's what we need to understand While there was a physical distance between the two parties there was not an emotional distance that Mary and Martha knew that Jesus not only had the power to heal because they believed in him him as the Messiah the savior they also knew that he was such good friends with Lazarus that he would have wanted to know about his sickness And so there was an emotional connection as they were distanced these 20 miles from one another And then it says in verse four but when Jesus heard about it he said Lazarus sickness will not end in death No it happened for the glory of God so that the son of God will receive glory from this And then it says in verse 5 so although Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus he stayed where he was for the next two days Kind of interesting isn't it Like if you know someone's really sick in your family so you send a message to someone that can make that person well thinking they're going to come come come come right now But he waited two days before he ever set foot to come back Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like you needed God right then It might have been a financial situation It might have been a relational situation Might have been a medical situation but you're crying out to God "God I need you right now." And for whatever reason God delayed in coming to meet that need for you Anybody ever been in a situation like that And we can look back going God why Why were you late Were you busy with something else Was I not important enough for you What was your delay in coming Here's what we need to understand Just like the story of Lazarus is the same for many times in our own lives That God's delay does not mean he's like an ostrich putting his head in the sand not paying attention that often times God will delay in responding to us in the way that we think he should in order to set us up for something bigger Had Jesus come right then while Lazarus was sick healed him from his sickness yes that would have been good and we might have read about it in the Bible But what we're going to discover Lazarus actually dies and God raises Jesus raises him from the dead It's even bigger and greater story So maybe today what you needed to hear is this God is never late He may not be on my time schedule and he may not be on your time schedule but he's never late God sees the picture of mine and your life in a way that we don't And is as much about bringing him glory as bringing us the good things that we desire for our lives And that's where Jesus found himself That's where the sisters found themselves That's where Lazarus found himself But then in verse 7 it says this Finally Jesus said to the disciples "Let's go back to Judea Judea Bethany." They're located in the same place He says "Let's go take care of him." And here's what you need to understand after that You can go home and read about it today in verses 8-19 But but when Jesus said "Let's go back." The disciples objected because you have to understand at this moment of time in the life of Jesus the tension of those that liked him versus those that dislike Jesus was at an all-time high In fact one of the reasons that Jesus was no longer in Judea they actually ran him out of town Many of the religious leaders at this moment were looking for a way to kill Jesus because they were so tired of his attention he was getting They were so tired of people looking to him more than they were looking to them They were just jealous They were prideful religious leaders and they were looking for a way to kill him So one of the reasons Jesus is no longer there is because he had to escape So when he said "Hey disciples let's head on back and check out Lazarus and see what's going on." Their response is like "Whoa Jesus let's not rush on this thing." Like Jesus do you know what we left And it can't be any better So if we go back there it actually might cost us our lives Lazarus being sick may not be our greatest priority if we go back and travel back to Judea But Jesus insisted they that they go back And he makes a statement If you read those verses later this afternoon he goes "Lazarus is sleeping We need to go check on him." And his disciples heard that And the word sleeping they thought he literally meant he's sleeping He was sick He was sleeping If he's sleeping that means he's probably going to get better which kind of said them even more There's no rush to go back if he's still okay But Jesus looked at him and said "Not sleeping but he's dead." Can you imagine the emotion of that conversation The disciples knew the close relationship that Jesus had with Lazarus and the sisters So imagine there had to be just kind of a silence just kind of a respectful silence a grieving silence knowing that if Lazarus had died Jesus must be hurting But I wonder this too Scripture doesn't say it but I do wonder in this moment of silence in this moment of tension that was taking place in this conversation The disciples have to be thinking well if he's dead there's those sense us going back and we may become dead too Like if he was sick Jesus we might go with you but he's dead There's nothing we can do The the the the hopelessness of the situation was evident And so there's this moment of silence that might have taken place there as they wonder "Jesus do we really want to go?" But Jesus being their leader and them being the followers of the leader Jesus said "No we're going to go." And they responded "Then Jesus will go with you." As they walk back we find out in verse um a little later in verse 20 this is what happens As he's walking back he's getting closer to where Lazarus had lived before he died Mary and Martha's there And it says this in verse 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming she went out to meet him But Mary her sister stayed in the house And Martha said to Jesus "Lord if it only had you been here my brother would not have died But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask." And so Martha runs up to him I don't know if she hugged him I don't know if she laid her his her head on his shoulder weeping because her brother had died If she might have fell at his feet but the Bible says that she ran out to him and said "Jesus Jesus if you'd only been here my brother wouldn't have died." This is one of those moments in scripture that I wish we could peel back and get more than the words on the page I wish we knew the emotions One commentary said this that she went out there and she was angry almost pointing at him going "Jesus if you had been here if you had done your job if you had responded like I told you to or we asked you to he wouldn't have died." I personally don't think it was anger Here's what I think was going on That Mary Martha as sad as she was as much as she was grieving at that moment she was not losing faith in Jesus She was looking at him going "Jesus this didn't turn out the way we expected This didn't turn out the way I wanted it to but I still believe Jesus had you been here I still have faith you could have healed him." Here's what Martha's doing for us She's giving us a picture of her personal faith And at this moment her faith was authentic Her faith was real Her faith is one that we might even look at and read about going I wish I had faith that way But Martha's faith was real but while it was real while it was authentic her faith was based on the past if you had been here She wasn't focused on the present She didn't have any thought and expectation and faith about the present But she had faith in what God Jesus could have done had he been there She had a real authentic faith from past that built the foundation of her faith but it wasn't stirring the present moment of her faith Let me explain this to you As I think about my life I can pinpoint three or four or five maybe more occasions in my life that God showed up so big so just godlike that it marked my faith And it is a foundation that I live my life on Now I remember when I was between eth and ninth grade year and I was at the summer camp and that's when God called me to the ministry If there was such thing as an audible voice I heard the voice of God to say "Keith I want you to be a pastor a minister for me for the rest of your life." It's the foundation When days get tough when things waver and I'm going God it is so hard to work as a pastor at a church I go back to that moment going God you nailed that down back then I built my faith on that There's other moments in our my faith journey that I can point to and when life gets tough I'm going "But God you showed up." If we took time in this room to go around the room I'm sure many of you would have those moments you could talk about Here's what I'm saying It is good to have had past experiences of our interaction with God that builds our faith But if the only interactions the only thought we have of God is of past interactions and we don't have current interactions we are living historical faith not an intimate current faith In this moment of her life Martha was looking at the past That's what her faith was based on Let's keep reading and she's going to expose to us more about her faith because after she said this in verse 23 Jesus said this Jesus told her says "Your brother will rise again." Yes Martha said "He will rise when everyone else rises at the last day." And so Jesus points her he goes "No no no Your brother may be dead but he's going to rise again." Now what we don't know or what she doesn't know we know because we're looking in previous right as look at the story what she didn't know Jesus was about to raise him from the dead right then but when he said your brother will rise again here's what m what Martha's doing now she's going from her past faith that she's looking to her future faith see there was the belief amongst the Jews back in those days that just like we have as we read scripture today that at some point God will bring all the dead people back to life and they will rise raise again and live eternally in heaven And so when Jesus said "Your brother's going to rise again," Martha's going "Yeah I had my past faith." Yes Jesus Just because you didn't show up and do you didn't do things the way I wanted you to do I'm not giving up on you I still believe that you will bring him back to life to spend eternity in heaven I believe in that He will rise again Now watch So she's got her past faith again Foundations are built on that She's got her future faith But Jesus is in the moment right there And Jesus wants Martha to see that following him faith in a almighty God has both past has present but he wants us to live in it fully in the moment as well So then Jesus turns to Martha and he says these words which are our fifth I am statement these words that he's going to clarify for her exactly who he is and clarify for her exactly what he wants her to understand Verse 25 Jesus told her "I am the resurrection and the life." The fifth I am statement that Jesus makes in the Gospel of John I am the resurrection I am the life Jesus wanted her faith to be based on the moment Not I was not I will be but I am right now He was declaring to her I am more than what you have experienced in the past I am more than what you expect me to be in the future I am what you need at this moment

And maybe as Jesus said that I am the resurrection and life He was speaking to more than to Martha he's speaking to us as well today Because don't we need Jesus to be who he is at this moment in our life If you're in this room you're going I am full of anxiety Jesus says I am your peace If you're in this room right now and you say I'm just full of anger Jesus says I am your forgiveness If you're in this room right now and you said "I am just full of grieving." He says "I am your comfort." Not "I was I will be." At this moment I am your comfort If you're like "Keith I'm just confused about life." Jesus says "I am your understanding." Jesus wants to be for us right now whatever we need He went on to tell Martha in his conversation with her He said there in verse 25 "Anyone who believes in me will live even after dying Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die." And then he said this "Do you believe this Martha?" Now here's what I know We all have lots of needs don't we We have emotional needs We have financial needs We have physical needs We have relational needs But the greatest need that you and I have in our lives is our spiritual need And that spiritual need is this When we take our last breath where will we spend eternity in heaven And that's the greatest need we had If I had a magic wand right now and I said "Who's got financial needs?" And you raised your hand I could wave the magic wand and give you all the money in the world you needed Like it would make life good then but guess what You would still have that spiritual need when you die Where will you spend eternity in heaven If you like I have fin I have relational needs I could give you the best relationship the best boyfriend girlfriend the best husband wife the best son daughter whatever If I had the magic wand to make those relationships great they would be awesome But they were just earthly relationships And when you die that same spiritual need is there Where will you spend eternity Same thing financial relational emotionally go down the road We all have that one basic need And here's what I love about Jesus The simplicity of how he responds to that need I told y'all many times that on Tuesday nights Denise have 15 Denise and I have 15 to 20 young adults 20somes that meet at our house for for our group And so this past week after we had our meal we sat around and I asked the question "So what are you thinking about the I am statements?" We'd gone through four at that time And one of the 20-year-olds just said something so profound And as the pastor I'm looking you know they're young sharpminded people right And I'm going "Pastor you showed this to me You showed this to me." And I was kind of looking for a couple of pats on the back right of how expository this whole this whole sermons And he said "Here's what I like about them They're so simple He goes Jesus wasn't complicating things Like he basically gave him a picture of who he was I am a door I am a shepherd I am the light I am bread And he goes I am just blown away by the I am statements over their

simplicity And I had to take a step back going "Wow that preaches good I should have preached it that way It had been a lot better sermon a shorter sermon People would have liked it a whole lot better right They're just so simple But but go back to what Jesus said there He said this in that verse 25 Anyone who believes in me will live even after dying He said "Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die." How much more simpler can it get And sometimes I have people come up to me going "Keith I'm really thinking about this whole God thing in Jesus but there's just some stuff in my life that I got to get rid of and I got to take care of before Jesus would ever want me." That's not what Jesus says there He goes "Just believe in me." Somebody says "Keith I don't understand all of it I'm still trying to understand the whole Bible Maybe when I understand more then I can grab a hold of it." And Jesus says "You'll probably never understand all of it Just believe in me." And so in that moment when Jesus says,"I am the resurrection and I am the life," he is answering every single one of those people and us today our greatest need about our spiritual life And after he says that then he says something still so simple and easy He goes "Do you believe Martha?" Now you know the best way to read that statement right there or that question Read it this way Do you believe this and fill in the blank Because he was asking her individually personally because it is a personal decision that every one of us have to make Do you believe this And fill in your name in that blank A simple question But the best part of a simple question it only takes a simple answer Yes Jesus I believe Now the story doesn't end there because after this conversation with Martha the Bible lets us know that Martha went back to Mary Now we don't know if Jesus said "Mar Martha go get Mary." Or Martha's going "Mary needs to know this stuff." And she didn't come out But the Bible says that Martha went back and got married and said "The teacher wants to see you." And so as you read this this afternoon hopefully again read it on your own to really get the full picture of this and all the good details But Mary comes and she says basically the same thing to Jesus as Martha did when she first met him Oh Jesus you're here If only you had been here this wouldn't have happened And just we get a picture as you read the details of it you get a picture of Jesus's real relationship with the sisters and this brother because the Bible lets us know that Jesus at this moment hit this emotional state In fact there's two words in there that's been said is the the Bible shortest verse and it says this Jesus wept He saw the grief He saw the heartbreak He saw all that was going on with with with Mary And the Bible says "And Jesus wept." Now we don't know what caused him to cry Some might say he wept because he was so sad that Lazarus died That doesn't make sense to me because he also knows he's about to bring him back to life My own personal opinion that Jesus was so empathetic and just felt what those that were feeling that he felt the emotion of the moment But I think there's another reason he might have wept because Jesus wanted every one of them to get the simple question so they would have this simple answer And he knew not everyone would get it And so part of his heart just broke going I came for them They're just not getting it But the Bible says that as he wept he went over to the tomb and people began to follow And Mary followed there and he said "Roll away the rock." Understand the tomb would have been in in the side of a mountain There had been a kind of small ca cave there that that's where they would put the the dead body of Lazarus and they would have rolled a rock and that's how they would have sealed it And he said "Roll away the rock." If you're reading it this afternoon and seeing the details and you're reading out of King James version it's going to say "And it stunkth." Okay Like like going "Jesus are you sure you want to roll open the rock He's been in there four days." I mean like we're going to roll the rock open and it's like "Woo it's going to smell." And Jesus said "Roll away the rock." And so they moved the rock And he said that famous line that you heard so many times "Lazarus come forth Come out here." One commentator said this "If he didn't say Lazarus and call him by name every dead person within a 5 mile radius would have came out." He had to be very specific who he's calling out And the Bible says that Lazarus walked out in his graveclo Now his grave clothes that would have been best way I can like visualize it here is think of it a loosely wrapped mummy Okay not grave clothes like someone dies today we put them in their Sunday best and we put them in the coffin No they would have wrapped him in some cloth Somehow I have this this vision of Scooby-Doo every time the mummy came walking after him That's kind of like Lazarus walking out right But the Bible says and Lazarus came out Now here's what I want you to understand Jesus said this when he declared the I am He says "I am the resurrection." And then he said "And I am the life I am the resurrection and the life." And at this moment Jesus is declaring for all to hear and for us to understand He has power over death and life Not only physical but eternal And when he says "I am the resurrection," he is giving you and I that opportunity to say "Yes I believe." Which gives us eternal life with him But he's also trying to help people to understand that he is there not just to give them eternal life But he is there to give us also earthly life Go back with me John chapter 10 when Jesus was talking about he is the door and he says I've come to give you life in John 10:10 I come to give you life and give it to you how more abundantly like his whole purpose is when he saves us and when we know that we have eternal relationship we'll spend eternity in heaven with him He doesn't want the goodness to start then He wants the goodness to start now In fact there's a verse in Philippians Philippians 3:10 and this is what the Apostle Paul prayed I want to know Christ yes to know the power of his resurrection I I want to know Christ and I want to know the power of his resurrection He wasn't saying one day know the power He's going while I'm on this earth God raised me more than just to save me from hell He saved me to live a full life for him A full life doesn't mean a full bank account A full life doesn't mean a big house A full life doesn't mean all the things the earth measures the world measures A full life means I am experiencing everything God made me for I'm experiencing fullness in relationships I'm experiencing fullness in my relationship with God I'm experience experiencing fullness and what it means to really love and serve people which makes my life fuller Jesus said "I come to give you life I come I am the resurrection and the life." So if you're here today and you've never said "Yes I believe." That's how you begin the life Yes I believe You don't have to have all the details figured out You don't have to have all the information memorized You don't even have to have your life all straightened out Jesus will take care and help you with that Eternal life Yes I believe earthly life How do you really experience earthly life My concern is this that there are so many people who have eternal life but still walk around like a dead mummy maybe not dead but you walk around in your grave clothes You're living like you were not who he made you to be today And so let me just wrap up If you're taking notes you can fill in some of these blanks Here's as a follower of Jesus how do you experience the fullness How do you experiencing the life that we're talking about the earthly life to go along with eternal life Here's just a few things that I see from the story First of all how do you do it The number one thing is you pursue it You pursue it Now understand in our salvation God pursues us We were dead Okay Lazarus didn't go find Jesus right He was as dead as could be and Jesus went and found him But once we have eternal life then we have a responsibility to pursue the earthly life that God has for us Look with me in the 28 verse 28 and verse 29 Then she returned to Mary talking about Martha Remember we talked about this part of the story Then she returned to Mary and she called Mary aside from the mount mourers and told her the teacher is here and he wants to see you So Mary immediately went to him Can you imagine how this story would have turned out if the Bible says and Martha went to Mary and said "The teacher wants to see you." And Mary's like "No I'm just going to sit here on my sofa I don't think I really want to go see Jesus I I'm I'm too comfortable I'm too sad I got too much other stuff going on I I'm too busy." What if Mary would have just said "No I won't go pursue the Savior Jesus who's calling me." She would have missed out That Jesus probably still would have raised Lazarus but Mary would have been home on the sofa and missed every bit of it Listen to me church We have a responsibility as a followers of Jesus that we are pursuing the very Jesus that we say that we follow That's one of the reasons this month when we started April 1st let's let's read Gospel of John together Simply reading the Bible is a good way to pursue him And that's why if you're like if you haven't don't like well maybe I'll get it around next year No just start tomorrow April 14th read the 14th chapter It's a very simple step in pursuing Jesus But we have to take the first step of pursue The second step the second way that we experience this earthly life he's talking about is we have to believe

it John 11:39 this how it reads specifically Roll the stone away Jesus told them "But Martha the dead man's sister protested,"Lord he has been dead for 4 days The smell will be terrible." Again King James version it's going to stinkketh Jesus if we roll that stone away No matter how stinky the situation Jesus believed And some of you are in stinky situations Some of you the circumstances whether it's your health whether it's your finances whether it's relationships whether it's your job you're just going "It stinks My life stinks right now." And we have a tendency to allow the odor of our circumstances to direct the direction we walk And believing says it doesn't matter what's around me I'm still going to believe I'm going to pursue and I'm going to

believe Third thing speak it You pursue it you believe it and you speak it

after Jesus said "Lazarus come out." There's a really interesting prayer that he also prayed And it's a prayer as you read it going "Okay are you praying it out loud for everyone to hear?" And I think some of that is but he's kind of talking to Jesus Let me just read the prayer to you This is verse 42 He says "Father thank you for hearing me You always hear me but listen to what he says But I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here so that you will believe They will believe you sent me Jesus is going I didn't need to speak it to believe it I believed it so much I could have just believed it and it could have happened Lazarus would have walked out But he's going some of these folks needed to hear it So here's what I take from that Sometimes you and I just need to speak it Have you ever come to church on a Sunday morning going "Well if I wasn't going to see my friends I probably wouldn't come today Or if I didn't feel like I needed to go I wouldn't go." when you get here and Stuart starts leading us in worship and there's nothing in you that wants to sing praises to God But the minute you start singing praises to God something inside of you lifts up going "Okay I'm getting there because you spoke it." Sometimes we just need to speak it before we ever start following it And so the third thing is simply just speak it The prayer that Paul prayed that I told you about in the book of Phil Philippians I want to know Christ yet yes to know the power of his resurrection What a great prayer that we could speak out loud every day Jesus I want to know the power of your resurrection I don't want to read about it I don't want to sing about it I don't want to hear somebody else talk about it Jesus I want to know the power of your resurrection the power that saved me eternally for heaven but the power that is rescuing me and giving me a full life on my earthly resurrection So we have to speak it Here's the last one Don't just speak it church Live it Verse 44 And the dead man talking about Lazarus and the dead man came out his hands and his feet bound in grave clothes his face wrapped in a headcloth And Jesus told them "Unwrap him and let him go." Can you imagine Lazarus comes walking out again I just got Scooby-Doo colliding with um the the Bible but he comes walking out like this He's got the grave clothes They're kind of loosely wrapped around him And Jesus like "Hey get those clothes those stinky grave clothes off of him." And Lazarus Lazarus would have said "No I think I kind of like them Jesus I've been wearing them four days It'd be a lot of trouble to get these clothes off I'm kind of used to the smell Jesus They're not that bad I think I'll just walk around alive living in my dead clothes." Can we just all say "Dumb Okay ridiculous Stupid." Yet watch this I wonder how many of us have been resurrected by the power of Jesus in our spiritual lives We have eternity in heaven and Jesus is now going for our earthly life Now walk in the power of the resurrection and he's like live forth like I'm in you and we're walking around in our dead grave clothes We're in the same habits we had before we ever met Jesus We got the same selfish sinful desires that we had before we ever met Jesus We're living in the same shame that we had before we met Jesus We're walking around That's too much trouble Jesus When Jesus saves us he saves us to walk in the resurrected power Does that mean just like that all my habits go away Does that mean just like that all my desires go away No But when we pursue it and we believe it and we speak it it puts us on the journey to live it Some of us may have to do a really big bath before we get get to heaven because she's going "Y'all walk so long in your spiritual grave clothes you still stink I got to spiritually clean you before I get you in heaven because you're going to stink up heaven."
